WWW Waiting on Wednesday

Wednesday, 1 April 2015

There are two really good book blogger events that happen on a Wednesday.

WWW Wednesdays used to be hosted over at Should Be Reading but it got cancelled, I however still really like the idea so will continue with it. If any of you still continue it then leave me a link and I will check yours out. To play along you answer these three questions: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next?

What am I currently reading?
Currently, I am reading Darkest Light by Alex Taylor. This book was sent to me by the author himself, all beautifully wrapped and signed, in exchange for a honest review. I am currently around 6 chapters in and I am very intrigued so far. There appears to be a multicoloured dog-type-creature and now I really really want one! My dogs are boring normal colours.
What did I recently finish reading?
I recently finished reading Saying Goodbye to Warsaw by Michael Cargill. This book was also given to me in exchange for a honest review and review it I did. This emotional wartime book managed to get 4 stars from me and I would recommend it to lovers of historical fiction and amusing, realistic characters. Read my review!

What do I think I'll read next?
I have genuinely no idea! I may reread Frankenstein or the Odyssey as both have been calling to me from my book shelf or perhaps I will read something completely different. Who knows?

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted over at Breaking the Spine and aims to spotlight upcoming books which we are really excited about! One book that I'm very very excited about is Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder, I absolutely loved the Study series and to find out that it was being continued with a fourth book was so great! I miss Yelena and Valek and I'm so happy to be able to see more of them. I know what you're all thinking - this book is already out! However it is not out in any of the shops where I've lived so to me it's still upcoming. I shall get my hands on it soon though!

Here's some more about it:
Once, only her own life hung in the balance… When Yelena was a poison taster, her life was simpler. She survived to become a vital part of the balance of power between rival countries Ixia and Sitia. Now she uses her magic to keep the peace in both lands—and protect her relationship with Valek. Suddenly, though, dissent is rising. And Valek’s job—and his life—are in danger. As Yelena tries to uncover her enemies, she faces a new challenge: her magic is blocked. And now she must find a way to keep not only herself but all that she holds dear alive.

I don't normally like fantasy but this series is just great.

Tell me about your WWW Wednesdays or Waiting on Wednesdays in the comments!

Waiting On Wednesday (#1)

Wednesday, 3 July 2013

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted over at Breaking the Spine - an event spotlighting the upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

I have taken part in this meme before but I wasn't very constant so I'm starting afresh which is why I've listed this post as '#1'.

So what book am I eagerly anticipating today?

The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2)Title: The Dream Thieves
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Series: The Raven Cycle, #2
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
Release Date: September 17th 2013
Cover Rating: 3/5 Stars
Synopsis: Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after...

What's so good about it?
After utterly adoring everything about the first book, The Raven Boys, I absolutely have to read this! This series has some of the best character development of any books I've read so it's only natural I want to see what happens next. One thing I am disappointed about is the cover, I thought the first one was gorgeous and, although this one is nice, it's nowhere near as good as the  first.

What are you looking forward to this week?

Top Ten... Most Intimidating Books

Tuesday, 2 July 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish. As many of you know, I love top tens so naturally this is my favorite meme and I'm so glad to be getting back to it at long last! So today's theme is...
Top Ten Most Intimidating Books!
Here are mine in no particular order:

War and PeaceA Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)Les Misérables

1) War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy - With almost 1400 pages, anyone who said this wasn't intimidating is clearly lying to you! The concept does look interesting though so I am planning to read this someday.

2) A Game Of Thrones by George R.R. Martin - This one I have already read but with the huge size, it took a lot of courage to start. Some of the other books in the series are even larger so it will take a lot to continue.

3) Les Miserables by Victor Hugo - This beats even War and Peace's word count at over 1450 pages. After loving the musical version though I vowed to read it.

A Tale of Two CitiesPandemonium (Delirium, #2)Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking, #3)

4) Anything by Charles Dickens - I am actually yet to finish a Dickens book mostly due to the fact that last time I tried I wasn't really old enough to appreciate. I am planning to read his full works some day though.

5) Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver - I know what you're all thinking, how can Pandemonium possibly intimidate me? Well, the answer is - I have no clue. It's been so long since I read the first that I don't even remember whether I liked it and I just don't want to start this one.

6) Monsters Of Men by Patrick Ness - I absolutely adored the first book in the series but the second one fell a bit flat for me so, one reason is I don't want the series to end on a low. Another reason is that Ness has a way of making you love a character then he kills them off at the end of the book. Think its a fluke? It's happened in both books, it's safe to assume he's doing it on purpose.

Paradise Lost A Clockwork OrangeBattle Royale

7) Paradise Lost by John Milton - Four words: 400 page epic poem.

8) A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess - I have been informed this book is not even in English but a mixture of Cockney and Russian. I absolutely despise slang  - I'm a Queen's English girl - so I don't know if I have much hope of getting through it.
9) Battle Royale by Koushun Takami - I've been told  its a more violent version of The Hunger Games and the concept scares me.

City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments, #6)

10) City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare - This one isn't even out yet and I know I will have trouble reading it. It is the last ever book in the Mortal Instrument series. Last. Ever. I may have to stretch it until the sequel series comes out...

So... what are your most intimidating books? And do you think you'll ever read them?

Stacking The Shelves (3)

Sunday, 24 June 2012

STSmall_thumb[2]
Stacking the shelves is hosted over at Tynga's Reviews. This week I bought seven books even though I haven't actually read any of the others I bought last week. I really do need to stop buying books, I have officially completely run out of space.

Bought:

Hallowed (Unearthly, #2)Everneath (Everneath, #1)

I'm excited to read Hallowed since I absolutely loved the first book, Unearthly.
Everneath is my Random Read this month and how could have I not bought it with such a stunning cover? I may have bought it because of that alone.

Forbidden (The Demon Trappers, #2)       Starcrossed

I have been waiting to read Forbidden for a long time and I saw it in the shop and had to get it.
My friend has been going on at me to read Starcrossed for ages so I got that at the same time.

Unravelling       Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1)

I bought Unravelling because somehow reading the blurb pulled me in, a countdown to save the world? I needed to know what happens.
I've seen Paranormalcy around about and thought it was about time I had a look at it.

Memoirs of a Geisha

I haven't ever wanted to read Memoirs Of A Geisha but it had been in a charity shop I went to for months and I felt sorry for it so I bought it and it doesn't look too bad. Plus it was less than a pound which is always a good thing.

So what did you get? Are your shelves as full as mine?

A Song On Sunday (12)

Sunday, 3 June 2012

It's Sunday so it's time for A Song On Sunday a weekly meme here at Confessions Of A Bookaholic. Want to take part? Easy! Just follow these steps:

1. Pick a song you love
2. Match it with a book you've read
3. Grab my button
4. Link back to me

5. Leave me a link so I can see your post

I've been looking for more excuses to choose songs by The Script for my SOS's because they are just amazing (and Irish!). So look what we have here... Dead Man Walking by The Script seems to fit Lauren DeStefano's Wither remarkably well. Wither is set in a dystopian world in which women only live to twenty and men twenty five. They know when they're going to die so I'd say they felt like dead men (and women) walking. What do you think?

What's your Song On Sunday this week?

Random Reads (3)

Saturday, 2 June 2012

Random Reads
Random Reads is a monthly meme hosted by I'm Loving Books.  The point of it is to read those books on your TBR pile that you probably would never get to otherwise. You know the ones that you put off again and again thinking I will read these soon when really you know that you will most likely NEVER get to them. Last month I achieved my Random Read; Specials by Scott Westerfield. Check out my review!

Want to join in?
1) If you’re on Goodreads enable sorting to your to-read shelf (you should see numbers next to each book now).
2) Go to Random.org and type in the Min as 1 and the Max as how many ever books are on your to-read shelf.
3) Scroll down to the book matching the number Random.org picks.
4) Link up to your Random Reads post at I'm Loving Books.

My Random Read this month is.......

Everneath By Brodi Ashton - Number 60 on my TBR list.

Everneath (Everneath, #1)
Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists. Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen. As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...

I think it looks really awesome and just look at that cover: WOW! I can't wait to read it.

Stacking The Shelves (1)

Sunday, 27 May 2012

STSmall_thumb[2]

Usually I do In My Mailbox to show off my new books but as I don't actually have a 'mailbox' I decided that Stacking The Shelves would be more appropriate. So this is my first Stacking The Shelves post! I got quite a few books this week and I didn't but a single one.
So this week I received:

For Review:
The Fairytale Keeper: Avenging the Queen
Both of these books were kindly sent to me from the author's, both paperbacks so I am now proudly displaying them on my shelf. I'm halfway through Prophecy Of The Most Beautiful and enjoying it. I have already read and reviewed The Fairytale Keeper and don't you just LOVE that cover?

Giveaway:
I am REALLY excited to read to read these two. I am currently reading City Of Glass so I'm resisting the urge to read the blurb of City Of Fallen Angels so I don't spoil it. I've heard great things about Grave Mercy, it involves assassin nuns, how can you go wrong with that? City Of Fallen Angels is courtesy of Dalene at A Date with a Book and Grave Mercy is courtesy of Mackenzie at Oh, For The Love Of Books.

A Song On Sunday (12)

It's Sunday so it's time for A Song On Sunday a weekly meme here at Confessions Of A Bookaholic. Want to take part? Easy! Just follow these steps:
1. Pick a song you love
2. Match it with a book you've read
3. Grab my button
4. Link back to me
5. Leave me a link so I can see your post

Since I just finished Divergent it seemed fitting to find a song to suit that but it's easier said than done. I eventually chose Born To Die by Lana Del Rey because it does seem like in their society that's what they're there for. It's as if they are used and then they die. Which is why this song is particularly fitting. What do you think?
